Degradation Description
The Pequonnock cement apron is located on the Pequonnock River in Glenwood Park in Bridgeport, Connecticut. As part of the realignment of Route 8 in 1969, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) installed a shallow cement apron across the river to break high flows and reduce the potential for erosion. In 2002 the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection installed a fish ladder about one-half mile upstream of the apron at the Bunnell’s Pond dam. Even though river herring are able to access the fishway, their passage is limited to periods of high flow conditions only. During average and low flow conditions, the apron restricts fish movement and significantly limits the effectiveness of fish passage upstream.
