Degradation Description
Prior to 1965 a dike / landfill access road was constructed across the Little River and fitted with undersized culverts which restricted tidal flow and favored the establishment and eventual domination by the invasive form of Phragmites australis. Additionally, the original channel configuration was altered, and a series of low berms were constructed on portions of the marsh, apparently for the purpose of using the marsh for additional landfill space. This system of interior berms further restricted tidal exchange within this 100+ acre tidal marsh system. These berms trap water and cause the marsh to remain saturated in certain areas, even at low tide.
