Degradation Description
A 4-foot high, Town-owned dam on a moderately sized river is blocking existing anadromous fish runs. Located 25 miles from the mouth of the Quinnipiac River, the Wallace Dam currently blocks all fish from moving upriver. At present, diadromous fish such as shad, alewife, sea-run brown trout, sea lamprey, and American eel migrating from Long Island Sound can be found at the base of the dam during spawning season. Wallace Dam is the first migratory barrier in the Quinnipiac River. Contaminated sediments and water rights eliminate the possibility of dam removal.
