Degradation Description
A small brackish tidal marsh on alewife cove was gradually becoming overrun by the invasive common reed, Phramites australis. During an inspection of the site by the Connecticut Tidal Marsh Restoration Team, it was discovered that the tidal creeks had become filled in with sediment and other debris. This marsh is at the base of a steep slope and freshwater runoff was getting trapped on the marsh. At the same time, less tidal water was getting on the marsh, which had established prime growing conditions for the Phragmites.
